Calculation Of Scores For JEE Main 2020 Result
The JEE Main Result is prepared on the basis of several factors including the marking scheme of JEE Main and the normalization method on the basis of the percentile scores secured by the candidates. National Testing Agency will be using the policy of ‘Normalization Procedure based on percentile Score’ in order to overcome such a problem of the unequal gain of marks. Now the normalization Procedure will be used for the JEE Main score which will be based on Percentile Score in order to ensure that the level of exam is equal for every candidate appearing for JEE Main 2020. The normalization will be done to make sure there is no uneven difficulty level in the exam.
Other than that, the marking schemes for the calculation of the JEE Main test score are as defined in the JEE Main exam pattern 2020. Here is a brief explanation.
Marking Scheme for JEE Main 2020
Marking Scheme for MCQs | Correct Answer | Four marks (+4) |
Unanswered /Marked for Review | No mark (0)
Incorrect Answer/Multiple Answer | Minus one mark (-1)
Marking Scheme for questions for which answer is a Numerical value | Correct Answer | Four marks (+4) |
Unanswered /Marked for Review | No mark (0)
Incorrect Answer/Multiple Answer | No mark (0)
Marking Scheme for Drawing Test –Part III | Evaluation of Two questions out of 100 marks. |
Normalization Method For Preparing JEE Main Result
There are various steps involved in it but the overall normalization procedure takes into account through this formula.
Check the steps to understand the normalization procedure for JEE Main Merit List 2020
Step 1: Division as per the session
Divison of the candidates as per the session is there so that there should be a fair decision as per the difficulty level of the paper.
Step 2: Result As Per The Each Session
For this mainly two steps are there such as preparation of the
- Raw Scores: Outline is set for the marks scored by the candidates. NTA never discloses the raw score but consider it while setting the final answer key. Simple logic flows in this context is that:
4 mark for each correct answer and 1 mark deduction for an incorrect response. |
- Percentiles Scores separately for each of the three subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) and the total score.
Step 3: Compilation of NTA score and preparation of overall merit/rank list
NTA will merge the Total Raw Score of all the sessions as given in step 1 and have the NTA scores. After this the compilation of result and preparation of overall JEE Main 2020 Merit List / Ranking is there.
Note: Percentile of all sessions will be calculated separately to determine the total Raw Score and Raw Scores in three subjects: Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
Final JEE Main 2020 Result
NTA will declare the final list of the JEE Main 2020 after the completion of the April session. Hence the combined marks of both the session (January & April) and the final result will be displayed. NTA will consider the best of two sessions to prepare the final JEE Main 2020 result. If someone only attempts only one session then for the final result, only that session will be considered for him/her.

What If There Is Tie Breaking Situation In JEE Main Result 2020?
Many a time candidates score the same marks in the exam, thus there is a tie-breaking situation in terms of ranking of the candidates. Let’s check the tie-breaking situation in each paper as per the steps given.
Paper 1 (B.Tech):
- The candidate who secures more percentile score in Mathematics will be ranked higher
- Tie still persist then the candidate who secures more percentile score in Physics will be ranked higher
- If then also not solved then the candidate who secures more percentile score in Chemistry will be ranked higher
- If tie still there then it leads to the selection of the candidate who is older in age
Paper 2 (B.Arch):
- The candidate who secures more percentile score in Mathematics will be ranked higher
- Tie still persist then the candidate who secures more percentile score in aptitude test will be ranked higher
- If then also not solved then the candidate who secures a higher score in Drawing test will be ranked higher
- Suppose tie is still there then, candidates having a lesser number of negative responses in the paper.
- Lastly if the tie still there then the older candidate will be ranked higher
Paper 3 (B.Planning):
- The candidate who secures more percentile score in Mathematics will be ranked higher
- Tie still persist then the candidate who secures more percentile score in aptitude test will be ranked higher
- If the above criteria do not break the tie, then the candidate will higher marks in planning based questions will be given the higher rank
- Suppose tie is still there then, candidates having a lesser number of negative responses in the paper.
- Lastly if the tie still there then the older candidate will be ranked higher
