TNEA stands for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission. It is an admission procedure that is carried out by Anna University. The admission procedure is also sometimes referred to as the Anna University admissions. Anna University is a technical University that was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the year 1978. In 2001, under the Amendment Act of 2001, the university became an affiliating university, taking under its wings all the engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. This included six government engineering colleges, three government-aided private institutions, and 426 self-financing colleges. On 1 February 2007, as a result of the decision taken by the government of Tamil Nadu, the university was split into six constituent universities. The institutes were formally created in 2010. On September 14th, 2011, a bill was passed to merge back the universities and it was finally merged in August 2012.

TNEA should not be confused with an entrance examination conducted for engineering colleges of Tamil Nadu. It is an admission procedure where admission is granted on the basis of percentage obtained in PCM in 10+2 or equivalent qualifying examination. TNEA is conducted annually and students need to register themselves to apply for admissions. Candidates who meet the cut-off will be called for counselling and the admission procedure. Seat allotment will be done differently for different categories. All applicants must fill the application form correctly and must attach all the required documents before the specified date.

TNEA 2018 Important dates
Students who wish to apply for TNEA 2018 should know all the important dates related to the admission. The events and their corresponding tentative dates are given below.

TNEA 2018 Counselling
The TNEA 2018 Counselling has begun from 8th June 2018. Counselling will include seat allotment and verification of documents. The counselling will be based on the merit and reservation of seats. Candidates who obtain a higher rank will be first called for counselling. They will also have the opportunity to choose the college and course at the time of counselling which will be conducted in an offline mode. All the eligible candidates will have to be present in person at the time of counselling with the required documents. Shortlisted candidates for TNEA 2018 counselling will have to pay the requisite counselling fee either through cash or a Demand Draft.
Under certain circumstances, if a candidate is not able to attend the counselling, then his/her parents can attend the counselling.
TNEA 2018 Eligibility Criteria
To seek admission in any of the affiliated engineering colleges under Anna University, candidates must fulfill all the eligibility criteria laid down by the admission conducting authority. The eligibility criteria for TNEA 2018 is given below:
Qualifying Examination
Candidates have to pass the qualifying examination with Physics, chemistry, and mathematics as compulsory subjects. They must have passed from a recognized board/university.
Candidates are required to score an aggregate of 50% in PCM for general category, 45% for backward class and backward class Muslims, 40% for SC/ST/SCA and 40% for DNC and MBC.
Age Criteria
Candidates must not be younger than 18 years of age and must not exceed 25 years of age.
Eligibility Criteria for Other State Students
Candidates belonging to the other-state quota, who are Indian citizens but not a native of Tamil Nadu can apply. They must, however, provide a valid certificate.
TNEA 2018 Registration / Application process
According to the recent notice issued by TNEA Authorities, Applications had to be filled online only. Candidates did not have to send the application. It was enough if they brought the application along with enclosures mentioned therein for Certificate Verification only.
The registration for TNEA 2018 admission had begun from 9:00 AM from 3rd May 2018. The application form for the same was issued by Anna University. Candidates had to fill and submit the online application form before the last date with the required document and application fee. Merely registering for TNEA 2018 will not make the candidate eligible for admission. He/she mandatorily had to fill the application form on www.annauniv.edu with documents like photocopy of class 10 mark sheet, High school certificate, transfer certificate, caste certificate (if applicable), HSC admit card, nativity certificate signed by the candidate, graduation certificate, Srilankan Tamil refugee certificate (if applicable), certificate for son/daughter of ex-servicemen/freedom fighter, PH category certificate or sports certificate.
Application fees
All candidates had to pay the requite fees of Rs. 500 for general category candidates and Rs. 250 for ST/SC/OBC category candidates. Application forms were not be complete until and unless the amount has been paid.
TNEA 2018 Cut-Off
The cut-off is the minimum qualifying marks required to qualify an examination, making the candidate eligible for admission. In case of Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission, the TNEA cut-off is prepared on the basis of the marks scored by students in 10+2 qualifying examination, the number of seats available and the number of candidates who have applied for the exam. The cut-off has been published online on the official website where candidates will have to enter the community and captcha given on the screen. Candidates who have scored equal to or more than the cut-off will be called for counselling.
Allocation of random numbers
After the applications have been scrutinized by the University, all the eligible candidates have been assigned random numbers. The random numbers have been allotted on the 5th June 2018 and will serve as a unique code for each candidate that cannot be reproduced later. These unique numbers will also be used in the tie-breaking policy.
TNEA 2018 Rank / Merit List
The rank list has been prepared by Anna University after considering the marks obtained in Physics, chemistry, and mathematics in the qualifying examination. The TNEA 2018 rank list was released on 30th June for only those candidates who had registered themselves during the online registration period. There is a process of normalization of marks that takes place for candidates who belong to boards other than Tamil Nadu. This is done so that there are no differences in the difficulty level of the exam conducted by different boards.
The Rank List has been prepared out of 200 where 100 marks are given to both Physics and chemistry and 100 to Mathematics alone.
Seats Reservation
There are a certain number of seats that are reserved for the candidates belonging to certain categories. The allotment of seats will be done for the below given 7 categories.

TNEA 2018 Seat Allotment
The Seat Allotment will be held during the counselling process. When allotting category-wise seats, the seats will be given first to the applicants of Tamil Nadu and then to those candidates who belong to other states. Choices opted by candidates will be taken into account to allot seats. Once the seat is allotted, the candidate will have to pay the requisite tuition fee.
Admissions Process for TNEA 2018
TNEA 2018 Admissions will take place after all the counselling and seat allotment procedures have ended. Candidates will have to report to the allotted college with the allotment letter and the required documents. They will then have to pay the course fee and complete all the admission formalities.
