The official dates for IBPS PO/MT VIII Preliminary and Mains Examination dates have been announced. Institute of Banking Personnel (IBPS), for the sake of recruiting various Probationary officers (PO) in Public sector banks, conducts the IBPS PO exam every year. IBPS provides recruitment services for public sector banks, SBI, RBI, NABARD, SIDBI, LIC & Insurance companies and regular member banks of the IBPS society.

News: The dates for the IBPS PO VIII Preliminary and Mains examination dates have been announced. The Preliminary examination will be held on 13th, 14th, 20th, and 21st October 2018. The Mains examination will be held on 18th November 2018

The IBPS Common Written Exam (CWE), previously known as IBPS Bank PO, was started in the year 2011 and has been conducted every year since then. The exam is conducted throughout India at various locations.

The application process starts online through the official website of IBPS and the exam consists of three stages:

  1. Prelims
  2. Mains
  3. Interview

The exam is conducted in the online mode only.

IBPS 2018 shall be conducted to recruit officers to 27 public sector banks and regional banks. This article shall discuss all about the eligibility, application procedure, exam pattern and results of the exam.

IBPS PO Pre- Exam Training

This is an interesting feature of the IBPS PO exam. The participating banks may offer training to the candidates appearing for the IBPS PO exam regarding how to crack it.

  • Who are eligible for IBPS PO pre-exam training?

The candidates belonging to minority groups and reserved categories only are eligible for pre-exam training.

  • How to apply for pre-exam training?

While filling the online application form, you shall come across the choice of participating in a pre-exam training programme. Select it if you are eligible and want to join. The selected candidates shall receive a call letter they can download online.

  • What are the expenses of pre-exam training?

Pre-exam training is free of cost. But the Candidates have to bear the expenses of traveling, boarding, lodging etc.

Eligibility For IBPS PO

Candidates desirous of appearing in the IBPS PO exam must ensure that they fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria. The eligibility criteria are discussed below:

Nationality/ Citizenship

The candidate must be one of the following:

  • a Citizen of India
  • a subject of Nepal
  • a subject of Bhutan
  • a Tibetan Refugee who came over to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India
  • a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Note: Candidates other than Indian Citizens must have a certificate of eligibility issued in their favour by the Government of India.

Age ( as on 1st August 2018)

  • Minimum: 20 years
  • Maximum 30 years

Relaxation on eligible age: The following relaxations are given on maximum age limit for candidates of reserved categories:

Educational Qualifications

The candidates must have a graduation degree in any discipline from a University recognised by the Govt. Of India or any equivalent qualification recognized as such by the Central Government.

NOTE: The eligibility shall be ascertained only on providing valid documentary proof issued by competent authorities during the time of Interview.

Application Procedure For IBPS PO

The application form for IBPS PO shall be available only on the online mode. Please ensure you are eligible to apply before proceeding.

The application form can be filled in the following steps:

  • Visit the IBPS’s website and click on the Home Page to open the link “CWE PO/MT”.
  • Click on the “Click here for New Registration”. You shall be redirected to the registration page.
  • Enter your basic information asked on that page and click on Save and Next button at the bottom of the page.
  • At this stage, a provisional registration number and password will be generated by the system and displayed on the screen. Note them down. An Email & SMS indicating the Provisional Registration number and Password will also be sent to you.
  • You shall now be redirected to the second section of the application form. Upload scanned copies of your recent photograph and signature at this step. The size and format of your scanned photo and signature should be as follows:

  • After successfully uploading your photograph and signature, click on the NEXT Button.
  • You shall land on the next section of the application procedure. You shall have to provide the following details:
  1. Personal details
  2. Educational qualifications and work experience
  3. Preference list for exam centres

After the particulars have been filled, click on Save and Next.

  • After that, you shall be shown a preview of your entered information. You shall have the option of editing, in case you made any error. Please ensure all the information furnished is correct. You shall not be able to change them later.
  • Make payment of the Application fees. The payment has to be made online through credit card/debit card or netbanking or IMPS or Cash Cards/ Mobile Wallets.

The application fee shall be as follows

ST/SC/PwD Rs. 100/-
Others Rs 600/-

After making the payment, Click on SUBMIT button. That shall bring you to the end of the application procedure.

Exam Pattern And Syllabus For IBPS PO CWE 2018

The entire recruitment procedure shall be conducted in three stages:

  • Preliminary exam
  • Mains exam
  • Interview

Preliminary Exam:

The exam pattern and syllabus for Prelims is explained in the table below:

NOTE: Candidates have to qualify each of the three tests by securing minimum cut-off marks to be decided by IBPS. Adequate number of candidates in each category as decided by IBPS depending upon requirements will be shortlisted for Online Main Examination.

Mains Examination

The mains exam shall include 5 tests of which one shall be descriptive in nature. The rest shall be objective. A specific time has been allotted for each section.

Note: A negative marking of 1/4th shall be deducted for every wrong answer.


Each candidate will be required to obtain a minimum score in each test of Online Main examination and also a minimum total score to be shortlisted for the next round i.e. interview.

Marks scored only in the Mains Examination shall be considered for shortlisting candidates for Interview.

  • The total marks allotted for Interview are 100.
  • The minimum qualifying marks in interview will be 40% (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PWD candidates).
  • The weightage (ratio)  of Main exam and interview will be 80:20 respectively.
  • The combined final score of candidates shall be arrived at on the basis of scores obtained by the candidates in the Main Examination of CWE PO/MT-VIII and Interview.
  • The interview shall be preceded by verification of documents. The following documents must be carried by the candidates (if applicable) on the day of the interview:
    • Printout of the valid Interview Call Letter.
    • Valid system generated a print out of the online application form.
    • Proof of Date of Birth.
    • Photo Identify Proof.
    • Mark-sheets or certificates for Graduation or equivalent qualification etc.
    • Caste Certificate issued by the competent authority.
    • Disability certificate.
    • An Ex-serviceman candidate has to produce a copy of the Service or Discharge book along with pension payment order and documentary proof of rank last / presently held (substantive as well as acting) at the time of interview.
    • Candidates serving in Government / quasi govt offices/ Public Sector Undertakings (including Nationalised Banks and Financial Institutions) are required to produce a “No Objection Certificate” from their employer at the time of interview.
    • Persons eligible for age relaxation must produce documentary proof.
    • Experience certificates, if any.
    • Any other relevant documents in support of eligibility

Biometric Data – Capturing And Verification

The biometric data (right thumb impression or otherwise) and the photograph of the candidates shall be captured on the day of the Main examination and Interview.

The biometric data and photograph will be captured / verified on the following occasions –

  • Before the start of the Main examination.
  • At the end of Main examination before leaving the exam hall / lab
  • At the time of document verification before the interview, if shortlisted
  • At the time of joining if provisionally allotted.
Note: Decision of the Biometric data verification authority with regard to its status (matched or mismatched) shall be final and under the responsibility of the candidates.

Call Letters For IBPS PO Exam

Call letters or admit cards are the proof that the candidates have applied and qualified to appear for the exam. Candidates must bring the respective call letters on the day of the preliminary exam, mains exam or interview at any cost. No candidate shall be allowed to appear in any of the exams without the respective call letters.

The call letters shall be available for download from the official website You shall be intimated through SMS and E-mail on your registered mobile number and ID when Call letters are released.

You must have the following the credentials to download the call letter:

  • Registration Number
  • Password/Date of Birth

No Call letter shall be sent by post.

Results Of IBPS PO 2018

The results of IBPS PO exams shall be declared online on the official website . The results can be viewed in the following steps:

  • Visit and search for trending notifications.
  • Click on the notification that mentions IBPS PO (CWE PO/MT VIII). The page for IBPS PO results will appear.
  • Enter the Registration ID and Password/ Date of Birth on the space provided and click on LOGIN.
  • Your IBPS result will appear. Keep a record for future reference.

Criteria of declaration of results

  • Prelims:

Candidates have to qualify in each of the three tests by securing minimum cut-off marks to be decided by IBPS. Adequate number of candidates in each category as decided by IBPS depending upon requirements will be shortlisted for Online Main Examination.

  • Mains:

In Mains too, candidates have to score the minimum, as decided by IBPS, in each of the 5 tests. For qualifying to the interview round, marks scored in mains only shall be taken into account.

  • Interview:

The minimum qualifying marks in interview will be 40% (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PWD candidates). For deciding final merit, marks of Mains and Interview both shall be accounted with a weightage of 80:20 (Mains:Interview).

If two or more candidates score the same marks, then candidate older in age shall be given more preference.

Cut-offs for Prelims and Mains for the year 2016-17

The cut-off marks for each section and overall in the prelims and mains exam of IBPS PO for the year 2016 are given below. Cut-Offs give a rough idea of what can be expected in the current year. However it is not necessary that previous trends shall prevail. Cut-offs are subjected to change dramatically with dramatic increase in the number of applicants and level of difficulty of the exam.

Final Provisional Allotment For IBPS PO

For deciding final merit, marks of Mains and Interview both shall be accounted with a weightage of 80:20 (Mains:Interview).

Allottment shall be decided depending on the vacancies to be filled in during the current financial year based on the business needs of the Participating Organisations and as reported to IBPS. Shortlisted candidates will be allotted to one of the participating organisations.

A candidate belonging to reserved category, selected on the basis of norms as applicable to General Category, will be treated at par with a General category candidate. However, their original category as registered in the online registration will remain unchanged.

The final allotment shall be based on the candidate fulfilling the standards of the participating organisation he/she has been allotted. On finding that the candidate is not eligible at any point, the candidature shall be cancelled.
